Good question, but the answer is complicated. Traditionally ADT sold video at a high price, since you needed a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) at your home (unless you wanted them to monitor video for you, which is usually cost-prohibitive for residential customers). Some commercial sites use video monitoring by ADT, but very few homeowners – so it you want to do your own, a DVR was normally required to store the video for you to review.
Now ADT is in the process of rolling out its new Pulse offering, and it appears that they have almost caught up with the smaller companies who have been offering smarter video for some time. By smarter video, I mean cameras you can view live over the internet, even on your PDA. Plus, these cameras also have motion analytics, so that they can create a motion-activated clip and send it to you, as well as store it remotely. At least, those are services that my company (FrontPoint) has offered for some time – for $ 39.99 a month, with discounted equipment and a suite of other interactive services like remote arm/disarm, free apps, and even text and email notifications. I am not sure if the ADT offering will be that good, but last I heard, the equipment was expensive, and the monthly charge was going to be at least $ 57 for the features.
